How to tag someone to Bluesky threads and replies

The same method for tagging friends in posts works seamlessly in replies and threads.

Simply type the "@" symbol followed by your friend’s username in the reply or thread text box. Bluesky’s autofill feature will help you find the correct user.

Once you publish, your friend will be notified, keeping the conversation lively and inclusive.

You can mention friends in your posts by using the "@" symbol followed by their username. Here's how:

Create a New Post: Open your Bluesky app and start a new post.

Mention Your Friend: In the text area, type the "@" symbol followed by your friend's username (e.g., @username). As you type, a dropdown menu may appear, allowing you to select the correct user.

Add Your Photo: Attach the desired photo to your post.

Publish: Once you've composed your post and mentioned your friend, click "Post" to share it.

By mentioning your friend in the post's text, they'll receive a notification and be aware of the photo you've shared.

Is tagging worth it?

Tagging isn’t just a fun way to include your friends in your posts. It can:

Boost Engagement: Posts with tagged friends often get more likes, comments, and visibility. For example, tagging a friend in a post about a shared event can lead to them resharing it, bringing in comments and interactions from their network as well.

Strengthen Connections: Tagging lets your friends know you’re thinking about them, whether you’re sharing a memory or a joke. Imagine tagging a friend in a nostalgic post about an old vacation—it’s a simple way to rekindle that bond.

Enhance Context: Sometimes, tagging someone can add clarity or relevance to your post, especially if they’re part of the story.

I have and will continue to. But you know why I say it here ? Because @bsky.app is 30m strong and growing quickly. The collective wisdom and influence of users here is far greater than any individual democrat. I can't say it enough. Bluesky can be the influence that can counter RW media.

As Bluesky continues to grow as a decentralized social media platform, we are discovering cool features, like tagging friends in posts, to enhance their experience.

Tagging friends on Bluesky is a fantastic way to enhance your posts and foster interactions. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you’ll be tagging like a pro in no time. So go ahead, share a memory, start a conversation, or give a shoutout—your friends will love being part of your Bluesky journey.

Can you untag yourself from a post?

On Bluesky, there is currently no direct way to "untag" yourself from a post like you would on platforms like Facebook or Instagram. However, you can manage mentions and take action to minimize visibility if someone tags you in a post you don’t want to be associated with.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Ask the Original Poster to Edit or Delete the Tag

If someone mentioned your handle (@username.bsky.social) in their post, the best way to remove it is by asking them to edit or delete the post.

  • Mute or Block the User

If someone is repeatedly tagging you in unwanted posts, you can mute or block them to stop seeing their content.

Go to their profile → Tap the three-dot menu → Select Mute or Block.

  • Limit Who Can Reply (If It’s Your Post)

If you made a post and someone tags you in an unwanted reply, you can set reply restrictions to "Followers only" or "Nobody" to prevent further mentions.

  • Report the Post (If Necessary)

If the tag is offensive, spammy, or harassing, you can report it to Bluesky's moderation team.

Bluesky is still evolving, so a formal "remove tag" option might be introduced in future updates.
