Bluesky Post Editor (Skeets Overview)

So here's the thing....Bluesky has seen a significant influx of new users following the 2024 US elections, as many left X/Twitter in search of alternative platforms.

However, it still lacks some features, including the ability to edit posts. While Bluesky's team is working on this feature, a third-party app called Skeets has stepped in to fill the gap.

Yeah, editing Bluesky post is not a native feature from Bluesky yet, but there’s a third-party app called Skeets that lets you do it. It’s super useful.

Here's an overview of the Skeets app:

What is Skeets?

Skeets is a third-party app designed for editing Bluesky posts. It’s not an official app though....

It was created by a Bluesky user named Sebastian Vogelsang. He developed Skeets using Bluesky’s open API, which allows developers to build custom tools and experiences for the platform.

That’s how he was able to create this app to mirror Bluesky’s functionality and add extra features like the edit option.

Skeets is a useful app for a Bluesky user like you who want to edit your posts. Its user-friendly interface, seamless integration with Bluesky, and additional features make it a valuable tool for us looking to enhance our Bluesky experience.

Key Features

  • Edit posts
  • Post notifications
  • Bookmarks

  • Push Notifications filter

Availability

Skeets is currently available for download on the App Store for iOS and iPad OS devices.  Right now, it’s only available for iOS and iPad OS users. So, if you have an iPhone or iPad, you can use it.

Pricing

There’s a free version, which already includes the editing feature, but there’s also a paid version if you want more features. It costs $1.99 per month or $17.99 per year.

Honestly, the free version should be enough for most people who just want basic tools like the edit function.

For just $1.99 per month, you get access to:

  • Hold reading position when refreshing
  • Edit posts
  • Post notifications
  • Thread Unroll
  • Bookmarks
  • Drafts
  • Push Notifications filter
  • Trends
  • In-App Translations
  • VoiceOver-friendly
  • Push Notifications filter
  • iOS Shortcuts support
  • Trends in Search
  • In-App Translations
  • Actionable Push Notifications
  • Alt-Text Generator (for images with text)
  • Hide like/repost/comments numbers
  • Async video upload

  • Customize main app color

"...as Bluesky continues to grow, some of these features might eventually become part of the official app. If that happens, I'll likely make the feature free and introduce new ones to keep things fresh...," - Skeets founder - (Sebastian Vogelsang)

Limitations

While Skeets provides a valuable service for Bluesky users, it's essential to note that the app doesn't directly edit posts on the native Bluesky platform. Instead, it copies the post, adds the revised text, and links back to the Skeets app.

Secondly it's limited to only iOS and iPad OS devices, making it difficult for Android users to enjoy the features.

For now you can edit text-only skeets and comments for 10mins after they have been created.

How this Bluesky Post Editor works

So, the way Skeets works is a bit different. Instead of directly editing the original post, it makes a copy of it.

Then, you can add your revisions, and the app attaches the updated part at the bottom with a timestamp and a note saying it was edited via Skeets.

It’s much faster than having to manually copy, delete, and repost a corrected version yourself.

Skeets doesn't directly edit the post on Bluesky. Instead, it copies the post, adds the revised text at the bottom, includes a timestamp, and links back to the Skeets app.

For now you can edit text-only skeets and comments for 10mins after they have been created.

The edited post will appear as a new post on your Bluesky timeline, with a note indicating that it's an edited version of the original post.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues while using Skeets to edit Bluesky posts, try the following:

Check your internet connection.

Ensure you're using the latest version of the Skeets app.

Log out and log back in to the Skeets app.

Contact Skeets support for further assistance.

By following these steps, you should be able to use the Skeets app to edit your Bluesky posts.

Final Word

In summary, while Bluesky's native edit feature is still in the works, Skeets provides a temporary solution for users who want to edit their posts.

It’s designed to give you a similar experience, just with some extra features. The editing tool is probably its biggest draw right now since it’s something so many people miss after leaving X/Twitter.

It’s kind of like how X keeps its edit button behind a paywall. But what if Bluesky eventually releases their own edit feature?

I think the developers are working on adding it natively, but there’s no clear timeline for when that might happen. Until then, Skeets is probably the best option if you want to make quick edits.

It's definitely worth trying. Let me know how it goes, and if you like it, we can compare notes on how it works.
