How to block on Bluesky

In this tutorial, we'll go through the steps on how to block someone on Bluesky

How to block on Bluesky

Just like when you remove a Bluesky follower, when you block a user, they can no longer send you messages, reply to your posts, or interact with you in any way. Their posts will also be hidden from your feed.

If someone is bothering you on the platform, blocking them is an effective way to prevent further interaction.

Steps to block a user on Bluesky

1. Navigate to the user's profile

To block a user, click on their avatar or username, which appears in their posts and profile.

2. Open the options menu

Once on their profile page, locate the three-dot menu next to the "Follow" button and click on it. This will open a dropdown menu with several options.

From the dropdown menu, choose the "Block Account" option. A confirmation dialog box will appear, explaining that blocked accounts cannot reply to your threads, mention or tag you, send a dm or chat with you.

4. Confirm the Block

Click the "Block" button in the confirmation dialog to finalize the action. After blocking, the user's profile will display as "User Blocked," their avatar will be blurred, and instead of posts, you'll see a "Posts Hidden" message. An "Unblock" button will appear in case you want to reverse this action later.

Using Moderation Lists to Block Multiple Users

Bluesky allows you to subscribe to block lists (also called "moderation lists") curated by other users. These lists help you block multiple users at once.

Things to Know About Blocking on Bluesky

Will the blocked user be notified?

No. Bluesky does not send notifications when someone is blocked. However, since Bluesky is a federated social media platform, the blocked user can find out if they try to visit your profile and see the "User Blocking You" message.

Can the blocked user see my profile?

Yes and no. While logged into their blocked account, they won’t see your posts. Instead, they will see "Posts Hidden." However, if they use another account or access your profile via a direct URL without logging in, they can still see your posts since Bluesky profiles are public.

Is blocking public?

Yes. Who you block is publicly recorded, meaning others can see that you've blocked someone. However, muting someone is private.

Does blocking automatically remove followers?

Not exactly. Blocking does not remove Bluesky follower or the "Follow" record from the blocked user’s account. While they remain a follower in their records, they won’t see your posts in their feed as long as they are blocked. If you unblock them, your posts will reappear for them.

By following these steps, you can manage your interactions on Bluesky effectively and ensure a more comfortable social media experience.
